Last year, the iPhone debuted to long lines and tons of hype. Users were drawn to the multi-touch screen and the seamless integration of Apple’s applications. For the most part it has lived up to the hype and has also spawned countless attempts to mimic its success, some of which are really cool.
In fact, mobile WiMAX networks are launching at a great time, marked by innovation in handsets. For WiMAX networks, there are sure to be some pretty cool phones coming to the market to take advantage of the faster bandwidth. So far, there are two handsets unveiled that I want to take a look at:
HTC Max 4G: Looking pretty awesome, and hopefully HTC is planning to bring it over to the states to work on Sprint’s XOHM network.

As Engadget describes it: “an 800 x 480 monster with 8GB of Flash on board, two cameras, an FM radio, GPS, WiFi, triband EDGE, and — most importantly — WiMAX support, making it the first GSM / WiMAX handset anywhere in the world.” One interesting feature is that when two MAX 4G phones connect, the call will be made over WiMAX VoIP, saving you minutes.
Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition: This phone is a WiMAX enabled version of an existing Nokia phone. A cool phone, and it’s available for the XOHM market right now, but is not likely to be the end-all WiMAX phone from Nokia.

Do you think the increased bandwidth that 4G offers is enough to make these devices “iPhone killers” in 2009? Or Is the Max 4G cool enough to do that on its own?

Jeff will wimax handover have a benefit to towerstream?
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your comment.
As you might have heard, Sprint is coming out with a duel mode phone that will be able to hand off between CDMA and WiMAX. This will benefit almost all WiMAX operators that have mobile networks. Some interesting data related to this is that a large percent of 4G and 3G users actually don’t handoff between sectors.
I hope that helps!
Thanks,
Jeff
